The difference between a good story and a great story often rests in how it is written. Professional editing helps take your writing to the next level.

A good edit checks for all the basics—grammar, punctuation, typos—but you also receive assistance to fill in the details and make the people, places, and events of your and your ancestors’ lives so real, they seem to walk right off the page.

Writing Your Life offers three types of editing services—developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading.

Developmental editing is a collaboration between the editor and the author. The editor works one-on-one with the author to make the text the best it can be. Developmental editing addresses and includes the following:

  • Grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Story structure
  • Style and consistent word usage
  • Sentence and paragraph structure
  • Effectiveness of opening/closing lines and paragraphs
  • Basic fact checking
  • Character development
  • Adequate use of description
  • Scene development and dialogue

Copyediting takes your text and gives it a good cleaning and polishing. It includes checks for the following:

  • Style and consistent word usage
  • Missing or misused words
  • Style variations
  • Grammar and punctuation
  • Spelling
  • Capitalization
  • Sentence structure variations
  • Paragraph lengths and breaks

Proofreading is the final check before a manuscript is formatted into a book and checks for the following:

  • Typographical errors
  • Spelling
  • Capitalization
  • Style and consistent word usage
  • Missing or misused words
  • Style variations
