Reading Like a Writer

What are the different purposes of reading? What do you think reading like a writer is? What is close reading and how can you practice it? Fair warning..I’ve been accused of ruining people’s mindless reading.

You’ll need to do a few things to prepare before you watch this video:

      • print the note-taking outline below for this video session
      • pick out a book from your collection, preferably a memoir, to use as we work our way through this section
      • print out the book cover handout below the video
      • pick out a passage from Educated by Tara Westover – as we go through this process, apply the principles to your passage

    Thank you for such great detail. I am delghted to see the close reading process broken down into steps that are easy to follow. Now I look forward to reading “Educated: A Memoir” using a more formal approach to analysis and reflection.
