It’s always a good idea to stretch your descriptive vocabulary. So often we fall into a rut with our language, using the same words over and over.
Foods are a great place to start when you want to bring fantastic detail into any story you’re writing because it’s something we humans have in common: we all have to eat. Even more than that, though, foods and scents in particular are known to trigger memories, so if you can describe foods well (especially how they smell), your readers will be drawn in and relate to the moment you’ve created.
Today, take eight minutes to make a list of your favorite foods, and then describe them in complete detail: the flavor, the aroma, the texture, color, and shape. Think about memories associated with the dishes. Talk about how eating things you love makes you feel. Don’t forget to be over-the-top vivid and detailed in your description of the foods themselves.
