Writing Prompt: Words, Real and Nonsense

Have you made up your own word that you use often? Is it a nonsense word? What is it? How would you define it? In what kinds of contexts do you use it? Have others picked up your word and begun using it? Is it silly or serious?

Perhaps you have a favorite word that is already in existence. What is your favorite word? What do you like about this word?  Why? When is the best time to use your favorite word?

If you are willing, please share in the comments below so we can all enjoy your stories.

A long time ago, George Carlin made a list of words you cannot say on television. I did not steal from this list. When my grandchildren came along it became a necessity to “watch my mouth.” The words I normally used in exasperation were now forbidden, in front of the babies. Children love cuss words. You can read an entire paragraph with only one cuss word in it, that’s the one they’ll remember and they’ll repeat it, especially if you have some radial reaction.

I like to think myself a connoisseur of the English language, but it made no difference if I hid the word, or mispronounced it, they were wise to me. So I made my own word that I could use in times of exasperation and it got past their little ears! The word is – crapola! It’s enough like the crayon company to slip past the cussing police.
