This Week’s Writing Prompt

As we move into Mother’s Day this weekend, many of us are thinking thoughts of our mothers or those special women who crossed our paths and have been like mothers to us. I was reminded of the endearing practice many of these women have in bestowing pet names on youngsters they love.

Did your mother or someone like a mother have a nickname for you?

  • How did this special name come about?
  • Did she call you by that name all the time or just now and then?
  • How did hearing this nickname make you feel?

Write a brief memory of you and your mom or mother figure. Be sure to weave in some dialogue to illustrate how she used your pet name.

Share your responses in the comments section below.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms!

Mama never had a pet name for me; in fact, she never had pet names for her sisters, brothers, dad, flowers, birds, etc.–but she loved each very much. She probably called me sweet names when I was a baby, though, because Dad was engaged with Uncle Sam’s Army during WWII.

Dad was a different story. He had a few pet names for me, but I’ll post those when Father’s Day rolls around.

Great to hear your voice, Bev. Miss our writing group.

Mom didn’t have a nickname for me. Honey was probably used often. Like you, my dad used a nickname. I, too, will share it in June for Father’s Day.

Don’t recall any pet any pet name s but Dad Had a few. Mom was typical,of those days….early 40’s….a homemaker, catered to Dad. “You must be very quiet when he arrives home from work”, etc. Dinner must be on table…. everyone present and ready at 5 pm.
She wore house dresses and small heeled shoes with stockings. Never say Mom in pants or bathing suit, even tho we spent the entire summer at the Lake.. she was in charge of all school and church events… seeing that we followed all the rules. And, she baked the best pies…lemon meringue was my favorite. Sure do miss her.
