This Week’s Writing Prompt

Serial memoirist Dani Shapiro mused in her recent newsletter: “I’ve heard it said that some years ask questions, and some years answer them.”

I’m sure you know what she means. My mind immediately went to a couple of years ago when I experienced a landslide of questions about how best to care for my aging parents several states away—as an only child. This past year, many of my questions were answered, and I experienced affirmation of numerous choices regarding my mother’s care.

But life isn’t always so black-and-white, as Shapiro quickly points out in her recent newsletter. Given a cancer diagnosis for her husband last March, coinciding precisely with her latest book Inheritance hitting the bestseller list, she felt “a swirl of so many questions and answers it was hard to tease them apart.” For instance, she asked, “What happens when great joy and great terror happen in virtually the same moment? When the dream and the nightmare touch hands?”

What about you?

        • Reflect on 2019. Was it a year of questions, answers, or some combination of the two?
        • What do you anticipate 2020 will hold—questions or answers about your life?
        • Have you experienced a moment “when great joy and great terror happen in virtually the same moment? When the dream and the nightmare touch hands?” What happened? How did you make it through?
