John B. Mitchell Jr. grew up on a dairy farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina more than three hundred miles from the nearest ocean but knew driving a tractor wasn’t his life’s calling. He built model ships and longed to sail the seas in defense of his country and in search of adventure.
At thirteen years old, John vowed to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and command a ship. Big dreams for a small farm boy, but John fulfilled those childhood goals and accomplished far more than he could have ever imagined, rising from the rank of midshipman to captain.
In Seven Ships–Seven Deployments, John writes of his amazing thirty years in the navy aboard a variety of warships, including destroyers, minesweepers, and aircraft carriers.
Thank you, John, for your dedicated service to our country and for giving me the privilege of helping you turn your adventures into a book fitting the remarkable life you’ve lived.
