November Writing Prompt

5449349063_f9864ec819_bYou’re probably expecting a prompt about Thanksgiving, turkeys, food, gratitude, or something else associated with this holiday, but not this time. We’re going way off topic to write about tattoos. Yes, that’s right—tats, ink, those colorful creations we see decorating the likes of grandmothers, Hollywood stars, athletes, and teenagers.

Tattoos have been around for thousands of years, but until the 1970s and ’80s, most people who had them were military servicemen. Today, according to a 2012 survey, one in five American adults sports a tattoo. To legitimize the form even further, the tattoo entered the world of fine art recently when more than 1,000 pieces were sold at auction by Guernsey’s in New York City.Tattoo Art

So, what about you? What do you think of tattoos? Do you have a tattoo? If you do, what is the tattoo, and what is its meaning to you? What prompted you to get one? If you don’t have one, why not? Have you ever considered it? If you had a tattoo, what might it be and what would it represent? Maybe you have a tattoo story unrelated to yourself. Tell us about that.

Write about tattoos and then share what you’ve written in the comments box below. Happy writing.

I’M in favor of writing. I can handle it on a wall, on the floor, on a billboard or cardboard. I can handle it on a card, in the sky, or on an ice cream truck. On me, no, not so much. I can’t say I ever considered it. It would mean something I might change my mind about, and I’d be trapped with it forever. Besides, a tattoo I got in my twenties with picture and words might look like and say something entirely different in my seventies. After all, as my granddaughter said, I need ironing.
I HAVE a daughter and grandchildren who have them. I have friends (be they young) who have them. Some of them I admire, but it remains: I think they’re nuts.

    Tattoos

Perhaps it’s my age rather than my artistic taste, but I’m no lover of tattoos. In the 50’s when I was growing up, the tattoo crowd came from the seedier side of town. It was not the style when I was in high school (class of 1960) or college (1964) or graduate school (1966).

No one in my family had a tattoo even though many served in WWII. My husband’s uncle was a submariner and he was tattoo free as was another uncle who was in the Army air Corps.

So tattoos are a little strange to me. I cannot conceive of getting one. They are not my style and I just don’t like them. But, for those who do like this, more power to them. Go for it. Just don’t expect complements from me.
