Genealogy connects loved ones to another in surprising ways, and this week, I want to share with you a story about the possibilities family history research provides.
Gil Smith is a close family friend of Catheryne, my assistant. Earlier this year, Gil and his wife Karen purchased an Ancestry DNA kit, and their results were astounding. Gil permitted us to print the Facebook post he shared once he received his results, and I’m so grateful he did.
Read Gil’s experience yourself and see some of the possibilities family history research can provide:
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t much of a believer at the time. When I received my results back I could not have been more shocked and surprised. The DNA told me I had a father/daughter match. WHAT ?? How could this be? After I got myself up off the floor, we started asking questions and did some math on the dates and location and low and behold it was right…[My] daughter and I both submitted DNA samples within weeks apart, and now we have two shocked people. Both of our heads are spinning out of control. Yes, shocked, surprised, sad, happy, excited, and bursting at the seams all at once. We have been communicating for a week now getting to know each other and have a meeting planned for this Saturday. I can hardly wait to meet her and her family, and she meets mine. Her name is Tanya. She has already captured my heart and meeting her will be the icing on the cake.
What a wonderful experience. If you haven’t begun, I encourage you to start now writing and preserving your precious memories. As you can see from Gil’s story, your work helps loved ones yesterday, today, and tomorrow. The possibilities are endless.
As always, I am here to help.
